More often than not wooden doors come fitted with mortice locks, they come in different sizes and brads so the one you have on your wooden door will just depend on the manufacturer’s choice. Unfortunately, not all locks that come fitted with the doors meet BS3621, especially older doors.

To check your lock meets BS3621 you need to look for the kite mark that will be displayed on the faceplate of the lock. If you can't find the BS3621 kitemark then it is worth calling out a locksmith to come and upgrade your lock, not only because they aren’t as secure as they can be, but you may also find you will struggle to get insurance or find that your current insurance policy is invalid due to the locks being substandard.

Why You May Need To Change A Mortice Lock?

There are many reasons your mortice lock might need to be changed, a few are listed below:

Your locks don’t meet BS3621.
You have just moved into your new property and want the locks changing to ensure you are the only one with a key to the property.
Your lock is faulty due to wear and tear or tampering, you may not always need to change a faulty lock sometimes they can be repaired, this is something your local locksmith can advise you on.

Rim Cylinders

Rim cylinders are often referred to as Yale locks. These locks are often used alongside a mortice lock on a wooden door. When you close your door behind you rim cylinders will automatically lock, which is good news for security but bad news if you don’t have your keys! Fortunately, all it takes is a quick call to a local locksmith and you will be back in your property in no time.

If your door only has a Yale lock then it would be wise to get a mortice lock fitted alongside it to help improve upon the overall security of your door.

Much like the mortice lock you will want to have your rim cylinder lock changed if, your locks don’t meet BS3621, you have just moved property or it is damaged.

Extra Security

There are a few ways in which you can improve your wooden doors overall security:

Install another BS3621 deadlock at the bottom of your door.
Install a rim cylinder lock if you don’t already have one.
Install bolts or chains, these can only be used when you are inside your property, but they are good for extra defense at night!
